Frequently Asked Questions

The questions our office and sport boards hear most often.

Registration

When does registration open?

Spring/summer sport registrations generally open in January and close in late winter. Fall/winter registrations open in late spring and summer. Exact dates for each sport are posted on the calendar and sent by newsletter.

What does registration cost?

Fees vary by sport and by level. In-house programs are the most affordable; travel teams cost more because of league fees, tournament entries, officials and uniforms. The current fee is shown on each registration form before you pay.

What if we miss the deadline?

Late registrations are accepted only if roster space and coaching capacity allow. Contact the sport's Vice President — waitlists are common in our largest programs.

Teams & Season

How are in-house teams formed?

In-house teams are balanced by grade, school and any evaluation the sport uses. We do our best to honor practical requests such as carpooling, but friend requests cannot be guaranteed.

How many practices and games are there?

Most in-house programs run one to two practices plus a game each week. Travel teams typically practice two to three times weekly with weekend league games and several tournaments.

Where are practices and games held?

At Prior Lake and Savage school gyms, city parks and P.L.A.Y. fields. Travel teams play roughly 60% of games in other communities, usually within about 25 miles.

Equipment & Uniforms

What equipment do we need to buy?

In-house programs generally require only basic personal gear; jerseys are included. Travel programs have sport-specific uniform requirements listed on each sport's page.

Can we get help with costs?

Yes. P.L.A.Y. It Forward covers registration and equipment for families who need support, and applications are handled confidentially.

Volunteering

Do I have to volunteer?

Some programs carry a volunteer requirement or a buy-out option. Roughly 1,000 volunteers run P.L.A.Y. each year — coaches, team managers, board members, field crews, scorekeepers and tournament staff.

How do I become a coach?

Complete the seasonal coach application, pass a background check and finish concussion and Positive Coaching Alliance training. Full details are on the coaching page.
